Things to See in Teguise: Guide to the Ancient Capital of Lanzarote

When you arrive at Constitution Square, the first thing you see is the tower of the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, with its lava bell tower streaked with lime. If you're wondering what to see in Teguise, the answer lies in its quiet streets, its green doors, and its history of pirates and Guanche princesses. Strolling here is a pleasure, especially if you avoid the Sunday bustle. The town preserves the charm of a time when it was the center of the island.

If someone asked me, this is what I would tell them about Teguise.

Wake up early for the market

The Teguise market opens on Sundays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. If you arrive early, you can see the stalls calmly and avoid the busiest hours. By 10:00 AM it's already bustling, so go early.

Stroll without haste

The streets of Teguise are the real attraction. Look out for the green wooden doors, the lava steps, and the street names like El Miedo or Timanfaya. Wear comfortable shoes because the ground is cobblestoned.

Visit the castle for free

Santa Bárbara Castle has free admission and is located at the top of the Guanapay Volcano. The views are 360 degrees, although the piracy exhibition is no longer there. It's worth it just for the landscape.
